A Libyan journalist was abducted today by unknown individuals in Benghazi, according to the media management agency.

“The General Press Authority strongly condemns the abduction of Shiraz Abdelhafid al-Mogasbi, a journalist working for the Authority in Benghazi, by a group of unknown individuals,” the statement said.

“The al-Madinah police department was informed and I contacted the prosecutor myself,” Abderazag al-Dajas, the president of the Authority, told AFP.

According to the organization, the perpetrators entered the offices of the Al Hayat newspaper, for which Mogasbi works, “threatening and intimidating officials and journalists.” The newspaper is housed in the Authority building. They refused to show any official documents or their identities and took Mogasbi with them.

The General Press Authority, condemning this act which “violates the laws that protect the press and journalists”, called on “all security services” to act quickly to find out what happened to Mogasbi.

Libya ranks 165th out of 180 countries in terms of press freedom in the list compiled every year by Reporters Without Borders.
