Boris Johnson had a meeting with his parliamentary group on Wednesday afternoon, a few hours after the publication of Sue Gray’s long-awaited report on the partygate.
The Cabinet official concluded that the political leadership was responsible for a culture that led to Downing Street rallies that violated the lockdown rules in force at the time.
The British Prime Minister and leader of the Conservative Party apologized both in the House of Commons and in a press conferencebut clarified that he considers it his duty to continue ruling and that he does not intend to resign, despite the demand of the opposition.
The immediate threat to Mr Johnson could come from Conservative MPs, who were waiting for the report to decide whether to launch an in-party process to oust their leader.
However, after the afternoon meeting, the atmosphere that has formed is that Boris Johnson is “safe for the time being”, according to the assessment of most political commentators.
Deputies present at the meeting stressed that Mr. Johnson “achieved the right tone”expressing sincere remorse and apologies for the case.
This assessment was made even by MPs who have publicly supported the resignation of the Prime Minister, such as Sir Roger Gale.
The experienced MP commented that the coming days will be crucial for Mr. Johnsonwhen the deputies will return to their constituencies due to the holidays for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
He added that the decisions of some of his colleagues will be judged by what they hear from their constituents.
Mr Johnson reportedly told lawmakers he had “made mistakes” and that he was “ultimately responsible” and would make changes to Downing Street.
