On Sunday (21), Chile went to the polls for the first round of the presidential election. The most voted candidate was the ultra-rightist José Antonio Kast, who will compete in the second round with the leftist candidate Gabriel Boric.
Kast gained ground in the campaign by exploiting fears of an alleged communist threat in Chile and drew attention for defending the dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet.
In addition to Kast, other ultra-right figures in Latin America are gaining strength, such as Deputy Javier Milei in Argentina and Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele — in addition to Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro, who is running for re-election in 2022.
In this Tuesday’s episode (23), Café da Manhã talks with Mathias Alencastro, columnist for sheet and researcher at Cebrap (Brazilian Center for Analysis and Planning), on what is behind the growth of the ultra-right in Latin America and its impacts on politics in the region.
The audio program is published on Spotify, partner streaming service of sheet in the initiative and which specializes in music, podcast and video. You can listen to the episode by clicking below. To access the app, simply register for free.
