The UN secretariat warned in a letter this week to the 193 member states of the organization about the danger of messages allegedly sent by its leader Antonio Guterres to their representatives in the context of a cyber attack.
Referring to a “series of information security incidents”, the letter, which was dated Tuesday and came to the attention of the French Agency today, states that many diplomats “received unsolicited messages supposedly coming from the Secretary General”.
These messages clarify to the recipient that Antonio Guterres is trying to contact them through his “personal number”.
The number is not linked to the UN and the messages were not sent by the secretariat, the secretariat said in a letter, noting that the UN chief’s communications with the Member States follow a protocol, which is not mentioned, and calls on members to verify the authenticity of the messages.
The UN Secretariat clarified in its letter that the misleading messages were transmitted from US telephone numbers and that the US authorities recorded incidents that took place this week.
