Sixteen new incidents smallpox of monkeys confirmed to England in the last 24 hours the United Kingdom Health Insurance Service.
There are now a total of 106 cases in the country (101 in England, three in Scotland and one each in Wales and Northern Ireland).
Public health officials, however, remain reassured that there will be no uncontrolled exponential increase in cases and note that the risk to the general population is low.
Most cases involve homosexual and bisexual men, who are called upon to pay special attention to rashes and skin sores.
The epidemiologist Dr. Adam Kucharski from the London School of Tropical Health and Medicine said it was unlikely virus develop into a pandemic because prolonged close contact is required to transmit it.
But he said the biggest risk was that the disease would become endemic in the UK or Europe if it spread to pets, that is, if there were permanent outbreaks, as is the case in Africa.
