Thousands rallied in Madrid on Saturday to demand a ban on prostitution.
The demonstrators, mostly women, marched on a main street in the Spanish capital, holding posters and placards reading “We, women, are not a commodity” and “Prostitution is not a profession”. Many shouted slogans such as “Stop sexual exploitation.”
The demonstration was organized by 175 collectives and attracted about 7,000 people, according to Madrid police.

The rally took place after the Spanish parliament on Thursday approved a bill to toughen penalties for sexual offenses. In addition to requiring the consent of all those involved in sexual acts, it also provides for a ban on the advertising of prostitution.

Activists called for additional measures to be included in the bill, which has yet to be approved by the Senate.
“The government’s measures look like a patch, which does not solve the main problem,” said Laura Rivas, a spokeswoman for the Madrid Feminist Movement, according to El Pais newspaper. What is needed is “a comprehensive response that will lead to the abolition of prostitution,” he said.
“Prostitution is the slavery of the 21st century,” another protester told Europa Press.
