US: FDA examines linking Hepatitis A outbreak to organic strawberries

The US Food and Drug Administration has announced that it is launching an investigation into fresh produce organic strawberries possibly associated with hepatitis A outbreak in many states.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Public Health Service of Canada and the Canadian Food and Drug Administration are also investigating strawberries.

“FreshKampo and HEB strawberry brands purchased between March 5 and April 25 “They are being investigated for connection to an outbreak in the United States and Canada,” the FDA said in a press release. “Consumers who bought fruit during this time period are encouraged to throw it away.”

Strawberries are sold in many major retail chains, including Walmart, Costco, Trader Joe’s, Kroger and Safeway.

Hepatitis A can cause mild to severe illness, and in rare cases, can cause liver disease and even deathaccording to the FDA, although most people who become infected recover completely within a few weeks.

“If you are not sure which brand you bought, when you bought your strawberries or where you bought them from before freezing them, the strawberries should be discarded,” the FDA said.

So far they have been reported 17 cases and 12 hospitalizations associated with strawberries. A total of 15 cases were reported in California, while Minnesota and North Dakota had one case each.
