Russia: Yeltsin’s son-in-law resigns as Putin’s adviser

Valentin Yumashev, son-in-law of former Russian President Boris Yeltsinresigned last month from an unpaid adviser to Vladimir Putin, according to Reuters, citing two sources close to Yumashev.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peshkov did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Valentin Yumashev declined to comment.

Ludmila Tellen, deputy director of the Boris Yeltsin Presidential Center – an institution on which Yumashev is a board member – told Reuters that she had resigned as an adviser to the Kremlin in April. Asked about the reason for his resignation, he said that “it was his own initiative”.

The second person from his circle, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that Valentin Yumashev resigned in April by an adviser to President Putin.

During the days of Boris Yeltsin in the Kremlin (1991-1999), Yumashev served as an adviser and later head of the presidential administration. He is married to Yeltsin’s daughter, Tatiana. Although he did not appear to have played a significant role in Putin’s decision-making, he was one of the few “connecting links” between the two Russian presidents at a time when Moscow was opening up to the West, at least until the invasion. in Ukraine.
