The attack on the Mona Lisa painting “Ambush of Cake” has escalated to the next level.

Video images distributed on the Internet show the protective glass that covers Leonardo da Vinci, the most famous piece of cake bread in the world.

Witnesses say they jumped out of his wheelchair yesterday and saw a man “dressed like an old woman” trying to break into a display case at the Louvre Museum in Paris, France.

He then appears to “put the cake in a glass and throw roses everywhere before confronting the guards”.

He was apparently a climate protester, and some bystanders heard him say it in French.

The man was said to be wearing lipstick and a wig.

The guards removed him, but it is not clear if he will take any further action.

Guards were later seen removing ice from the glass of the 16th-century works.

Louvre officials were unable to comment.

The Italian Renaissance paintings were not damaged during the incident.

The masterpiece, dating from 1503, is now one of the most protected works in the world after several attempted break-ins or robberies.

This painting was made famous in the Louvre Museum in 1911 and has been on permanent display since 1797.

The destroyer damaged the canvas with sulfuric acid in the 1950s, and in 1956 a student threw a rock. It was then stored behind protective glass.

The final attack on the work took place in 2009 when a Russian woman denied French citizenship threw a ceramic teacup at it.

The glass was broken, but there was no damage to the glass or paint.
