Joe Biden has invited leaders from some 110 countries to attend a digital summit in December on democracy, including the United States’ main Western allies, as well as Iraq, India and Pakistan, according to a list posted yesterday. on the State Department website.

China, a key US competitor internationally, is missing from the list, as opposed to Taiwan, which will undoubtedly anger Beijing. Turkey, a US ally in NATO, is also absent.

In the Middle East, only Israel and Iraq have been invited to the digital summit, hosted by the US president, on December 9th and 10th. Arab countries that have traditionally had close ties with Washington – Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates – are missing from the list.

However, Joe Biden invited Brazil, ruled by the far-right, highly controversial President Zaich Bolsonaro.

In Europe, Poland will be represented, despite rising tensions with Brussels over the rule of law; Hungary has not been invited by the highly controversial Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

In Africa, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, South Africa, Nigeria and Niger are among the invited countries.
