Thousands took to the streets of Buenos Aires to protest femicide and gender violence.

This march was part of the seven-year-old Ni Una Menos, or “Not One Woman Less” movement.

The demonstrators marched from the center of the Argentine capital towards the National Assembly. There candles were lit in memory of the victims of gender violence.

Protesters put up banners reading “I want to live,” while others posted photos of femicide victims.

The women also played drums and sang songs during the march.

According to the Women’s Secretariat of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation, last year in Argentina there was an average of one femicide every 35 hours, and 81% of those murdered were considered victims of domestic violence.

“Many of the murdered women belong to the police (issued a statement) and had previously filed complaints with the ministry (for women),” said Marina Pérez, a 50-year-old railway employee.

“They still killed them. There is no immediate response to the violence,” he added.

As soon as it got dark, the Argentine parliament glowed pink in solidarity with the protesters.

“What is happening to us is slow and patriarchal justice,” Alejandra Lume, a 58-year-old Argentine woman, said with subtitles. “Older women are also killed.”

“Despite many complaints, women often do not listen, do not care, and in general, the dead die after many complaints.”
