Glasgow councilor says it “doesn’t make sense” to spend public money celebrating the Platinum Jubilee in the face of a living crisis.
The city council dismissed this weekend as there was no significant act to commemorate the Queen’s 70th birthday.
The main tribute to Her Majesty in Glasgow is the Jubilee themed menu at the school, tomorrow we will worship in the city’s cathedral.
While some criticized the lack of events, Greens adviser Leoda Mas defended the decision not to host huge street parties and parades like the rest of Scotland.
He states: “To allocate even a penny in the Glasgow City Council budget would be a shameful insult during the chronic cost of living crisis.
If you wish, you are free to celebrate this “tradition” at your own expense.
Ricky Bell, Vice Chairman of the SNP Board, said: “I don’t think it makes sense to spend money on Jubilee holidays given the current financial constraints facing the City of Glasgow.
He added: “I want to demand every penny to help with the cost of living crisis.”
Greens adviser Anthony Carroll said he prefers Glasgow to celebrate Glasgow’s history and its “proud moments” as a city.
Not all see the light of day, but Conservative councilor Thomas Kelly has accused the SNP/Greens coalition of electing “Her Majesty”.
“Platinum Jubilee is a great opportunity to celebrate Her Majesty’s tireless dedication to our country and I am proud to celebrate the Queen.
“Although other towns and cities in Scotland are celebrating the anniversary fairly, the nationalists who control Glasgow City Council seem to prove themselves spiritually trivial and evil.
“But even if he refuses to celebrate, Glasgow will come together to celebrate Her Majesty’s wonderful and historic Platinum Anniversary and her decade of sincere public service to our country. She will not interfere.”
