North Korea fired eight ballistic missiles

North Korea’s new weapons test came in the wake of a visit by a US government envoy to Seoul.

North Korea has fired eight short-range ballistic missiles from the Pyongyang region east into the East Sea, South Korea’s national defense chief said in a statement.

North Korea’s new weapons test came in the wake of a visit by a US government envoy to Seoul.

Since the beginning of the year, Pyongyang has stepped up its weapons tests, including intercontinental ballistic missile launches (ICBMs), despite the suffocating international financial sanctions that exist and despite facing a new pandemic outbreak.

In May, it conducted three tests, including one of the Hwasong-17, possibly the largest ICBM in its arsenal, just 24 hours after US President Joe Biden’s visit to South Korea.

US Special Representative for North Korea Sang Kim met in Seoul on Friday with his South Korean and Japanese counterparts Kim Gong and Funakoshi Takehiro, respectively, to consider “all possibilities”, as there are indications that may soon proceed to the seventh nuclear test in its history, the first in five years.

Negotiations to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula remain deadlocked from 2019.
