A group of Ukrainian school graduates celebrated their graduation in a dilapidated classroom in black clothes and ties.
The end of the school year is often a fun opportunity to celebrate the last day of school and the start of summer vacation.
Traditionally, Ukrainian school graduates waltz in front of their peers the last time the school bell rings.
But for students from all over Ukraine, last year’s rating was unique.
Many have seen Russian troops wreck classes and destroy schools.
However, after graduating from Kharkiv school â„–134, they decided to report the incident.
The students danced the last waltz and gathered to take photos with the ruins of the school as a backdrop.
“We came up with another ‘last call’ for our children, which is what we want to celebrate for our children,” said Olena Mosorowa, a school geography teacher.
According to the Ukrainian media outlet Suspilne, about a third of the students gathered on Sunday.
Instead of waltzing in front of the entire school, the students danced under the watchful eyes of Ukrainian soldiers.
Anna Episheva, 16, pictured in a red dress among the rubble, said:
“We chose the dress with the girl and we were pleased that they were all very beautiful on the day of the graduation ceremony.
“But the ‘Russian world’ came to us and interfered with all the plans we dreamed of.
Another graduate, Hlib Opashnian, said he saw the school demolished a few days after Russia invaded Ukraine in February, adding that he “was ready to graduate.”
Just 30 miles from the Russian border since the start of the war, Kharkiv has been targeted by Vladimirputin’s army, forcing thousands to flee the city.
Many students have not yet returned to the city.
Private Costantin Nemichev, who helped protect the city, said that School 134 was the last outpost of the Russian occupiers before they were pushed out of Kharkiv.
Local mayor Ihor Terekhov said a Russian attack in Kharkiv yesterday killed one person and wounded three.
Russia “doesn’t leave Kharkiv alone and is always scaring people,” he added.
