According to an April poll, Erdogan could be defeated in the second round of elections by many of his potential opponents.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has announced, as expected, that he will run again in the June 2023 presidential election.
At the same time, he ruled out the possibility of calling early elections, as demanded by the opposition.
“Yes, I say it: the candidate of the People’s Alliance is “Tayyip Erdogan,” he said from Izmirreferring to the co-operation of his party, the AKP, with the nationalist MHP.
His party officials welcomed the announcement with applause, while rhythmically shouting the name of the president.
THE Erdogan reiterated that the elections will be held in mid-June 2023 and then addressed the leader of the largest opposition party, Kemal Kilicdaroglu.
“Stop the evasions (…) You can no longer postpone the issue of your candidacy,” said Erdogan, who has ruled Turkey continuously since 2003, first as prime minister and then as president.
The six-party opposition coalition has not yet nominated a candidate for the presidency.
According to a poll conducted in April by the Metropoll Institute, Erdogan could be defeated in the second round of elections by many of his potential opponents.
