The Ukrainian sanctions, imposed four months after the start of the Russian invasion, are seen as having a more symbolic character than a substantial impact.

The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky has signed a decree imposing sanctions – including asset freezes and travel bans – on Russian President Vladimir Putin and dozens of top Kremlin officials, as officially announced today by the Ukrainian presidency.

Among Russian officials sanctioned by Kyiv are Russian President Dmitry Peshkov’s spokesman, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, and Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu.

The Ukrainian sanctions, imposed four months after the start of the Russian invasion, are estimated to have a more symbolic character than a substantial impact.

During the first weeks of the war, Zelensky pressed for a meeting with Putin, but the Kremlin did not give much hope for its realization, stressing that many preparatory consultations between diplomatic missions from the two countries had to precede.

Peace talks between Kiev and Moscow have now “frozen” and Ukraine is pressuring the European Union to impose a seventh package of sanctions on Russia.
