Putin: Legislative termination of the jurisdiction of the European Court of Human Rights in Russia

ECtHR rulings against Russia issued after 15 March 2022 (the date on which Russia announced its withdrawal from the Council of Europe) will not apply

It cuts – and formally – ties with international legality o Vladimir Putin after the withdrawal of Russia from the Council of Europe, as it signed the law terminating the jurisdiction of the European Court of Human Rights in Russia.

The Russian president signed into law the approved bills for non-compliance with the rulings of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in Russia, according to the corresponding documents published on the official state portal on Saturday, TASS reports.

Thus, the ECtHR rulings against Russia issued after 15 March 2022 (date on which Russia announced its withdrawal from the Council of Europe) will not apply, while payments of compensation in accordance with the decisions of the ECtHR will be made only in rubles and only in accounts in Russian banks.

However, the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office will be able to make payments in accordance with the decisions of the ECHR until on January 1, 2023.

The Russian State Duma last week approved two bills that end the ECHR’s jurisdiction in the Russian Federation.

In fact, the president of Russia Dmitry Medvedev He said that Russia’s withdrawal from the organization was an opportunity to restore the death penalty, which is prohibited by Council of Europe rules.
