On Friday, the 34-year-old suspect, armed with two kitchen knives, alternately attacked four “randomly selected” people at a higher education institution in Ham-Lipstad, West Germany.
The alleged perpetrator of the knife attack on Friday at a German university, who injured four people, including a woman who is in a state of shock, was taken to a psychiatric hospital, the Dortmund prosecutor’s office announced.
The 34-year-old suspect, armed with two kitchen knives, took turns attacking four “randomly selected” people at a higher education institution in Hamm-Lipstad, West Germany, prosecutor’s office spokesman Hener Kruse said in an interview.
A 30-year-old assistant professor who was attacked while attending a conference is currently between life and death. “Doctors no longer have any hope that he will succeed,” he said.
The 34-year-old had previously stabbed a 22-year-old student eight times in the abdomen, who needed urgent surgery, but her life is not in danger. The other two victims, a 22-year-old and a peer, have minor injuries, he clarified.
The suspect, who had been studying at this university for a long time, was eventually stopped by students and the police, who quickly arrived at the scene.
He himself admitted the facts, explaining that he acted in this way because he felt threatened by a group of students who, according to him, wanted to “kill” him. He is said to be suffering from “paranoid schizophrenia” and “hallucinations”, according to Kruse.
The man, who was receiving long-term treatment for mental disorders, had attempted suicide two days before the attack and had voluntarily stayed in a psychiatric care center before asking to leave.
Police ruled out any political or religious motives.
An investigation into the attempted murder and serious injury is being carried out against him, said the representative of the prosecutor’s office.
