Olaf Solz: “The unilateral amendment to the Northern Ireland Protocol is sad and unjustified”

“Britain has made a very sad decision that goes against all the agreements between the EU and Britain,” said German Chancellor Olaf Soltz.

German Chancellor Olaf Soltz said he regretted Britain’s “unjustified” decision to introduce a bill that would abolish controls on goods moving between Britain and Northern Ireland, adding that the European Union would have a unified response.

“Britain has made a very sad decision that goes against all the agreements between the EU and Britain,” he said. “It is also unjustified because the European Commission has made so many realistic proposals. The EU will be united in its response and has the full range of means at its disposal.”

Britain today announced plans to circumvent some of the post-Brexit trade rules for Northern Ireland, lifting controls and challenging the role of the European Court of Justice in a new conflict with Brussels.

Tensions have been rising for months since Britain accused the EU of taking an authoritarian approach to the movement of goods between Britain and Northern Ireland – checks needed to keep the border with EU member Ireland open.
