Russia threatens to “disappear” from Europe if Western leaders supply Ukraine with nuclear weapons.
Vyacheslav Volodin, one of Vladimir Putin’s main political allies, warned that such a move would provoke a “nuclear war” on the continent.
As a key figure in Russian politics and one of the first officials to publicly support the war, his words should not be underestimated.
His apocalyptic threat comes after former Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorsky asked President Zelensky to hand over nuclear weapons to strengthen his defenses.
“Europeans will have much more serious problems with such MPs than they already have today (refugees, record inflation, energy crisis),” House head Volodymyr told Telegram.
“Sikorsky is causing a nuclear war in the heart of Europe. He is not thinking about the future of Ukraine or Poland.
“If your proposal is implemented, these countries and Europe will disappear.
“He needs to be seen by a psychiatrist, go through a mission and be supervised at home.
“It is thanks to people like Sikorsky that Ukraine needs to be demilitarized not only to free it from Nazi ideology, but also to secure the nuclear status of their country.”
No Western leader has proposed equipping Ukraine with nuclear weapons, and it is unclear whether Poland has any plans to do so.
Mr. Sikorsky told the Ukrainian television station EspresoTV that the Russian president violated the 1994 Budapest Memorandum of Understanding, which regulates Ukraine’s territorial integrity, the Sun reported.
He said that the violation justified the supply of nuclear weapons from the West.
Ukraine agreed to hand over all nuclear weapons to the country after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
In a Twitter post addressed to Mr. Volodin, Mr. Sikorsky said:
“Now they are colonizing it and threatening both Ukraine and NATO with their nuclear weapons.
If you use them, you just want to know that there are options too.
Immediately after Russia’s invasion in February, Putin put nuclear forces on alert due to NATO’s “aggressive comments” and harsh economic sanctions.
You may also have seen the Kremlin move nuclear missiles to the Russian-Finnish border before joining the Atlantic Alliance in Scandinavian national plans.
