At least two people were killed and seven wounded in Turkish airstrikes targeting positions Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in the northern Iraqi province of Sinjar, security sources said today.

According to sources, one raid targeted the headquarters of the intelligence services and the other hit a council building, causing damage to neighboring shops.

Videos posted on social media show thick columns of smoke and fires as people run out into the streets, although Reuters has not yet been able to confirm their authenticity.

THE Turkey conducts long-running campaign in Iraq and Syria against PKK fighters and the Syrian Kurdish militia YPG – both designated terrorist organizations by Ankara.

Turkey regularly carries out airstrikes in northern Iraq and has sent commandos to support the attacks.

In April, the Turkish Foreign Ministry summoned the Iraqi envoy after Baghdad accused Ankara of violating its sovereignty and called on it to withdraw all its forces from Iraqi territory.

The PKK took up arms against the Turkish state in 1984. At least 40,000 people have been killed in the conflict, which in the past focused mainly on southeastern Turkey.
