Cuba: At least 47 people have been killed in an explosion at the Saratoga Hotel

The blast at the Saratoga Hotel in central Havana on May 6 killed 47 people and injured 99 others.

The forty-four-year-old succumbed to her injuries yesterday at the hospital where she was being treated, raising to 47 the official death toll from the explosion that destroyed a luxury hotel in Havana in early May.

“We are saddened to announce that Vanessa Serra Souris, 44, has died in the last few hours. “He was hospitalized in a very serious condition,” he said in a statement issued by the Cuban Ministry of Health.

On May 6, a gas explosion ripped through four floors of the Saratoga Hotel in the center of the Caribbean island capital.

The accident left 47 people dead and 99 injured. One of the injured continues to be hospitalized, according to the Ministry of Health.

The Saratoga, a neoclassical building in the old town, remained closed for two years due to the pandemic and was being rebuilt in anticipation of its reopening when the disaster struck. He was internationally known for welcoming various celebrities in recent years, from Mick Jagger to Beyoncé and Madonna.

Built in 1880 to house shops, the building was converted into a hotel in 1993 and became a five-star hotel in 2005.
