One Russian warship violated Danish territorial waters twice this morning in the north of Bornholm Islandwhere a “democracy festival” was held with the participation of MPs and businessmen, announced the country’s Armed Forces.
Denmark described this action “Unacceptable challenge”.
The Russian warship entered the territorial waters of Denmark at 03.30 (Greek time) and again a few hours later. He left after the Danish Navy contacted him by radio, according to the announcement.
“A profoundly irresponsible, blatant and utterly unacceptable Russian provocation in the midst of #fmdk,” Foreign Minister Gipe Kofont said on Twitter, referring to the “Danish Democratic Festival”. The annual festival is attended by high-ranking government officials, such as Kofont himself and Prime Minister Mete Frederiksen.
“Intimidation methods do not work in Denmark,” he said. The Russian ambassador was called for explanationsÏ‚.
Last month, Ukraine’s Defense Ministry announced that it had begun receiving Harpoon missiles from Denmark as part of cooperation between the two countries. Earlier in the day, Kyiv said its forces had hit a Russian tug with two Harpoon missiles in the Black Sea. This is the first time Ukraine has claimed to be targeting Russian ships it has received from the West.
The Russian embassy in Copenhagen did not respond to a request for comment.
