Fire in Evia: Without a single front but with many scattered outbreaks

by

Strong firefighters remain in the area and operate. In a new update late at night, the coordinating body of the area stated that the front has now been “identified” and measures are being taken to prevent the fire from spreading.

Improved compared to yesterday afternoon, the Fire Brigade characterizes the image of the fire in the area of Gaia in Evia.

There is no longer a united front while the ground forces – which have been reinforced from all over Central Greece and Attica – are fighting with scattered outbreaks, which are still burning within the perimeter of the fire.

The Fire Brigade talks about a difficult fire, as the strong winds and the terrain of the area created dangerous situations yesterday afternoon. In a new update late at night, the coordinating body of the area stated that the front has now been “identified” and measures are being taken to prevent the fire from spreading.

Executives of PS reported that during the night the weather conditions are expected to change, with significant weakening of the winds and increase of humidity, which will make it easier for the ground forces to approach the points where there are active foci.

The aim is to keep the fire at a good level, so that with the first light of day, when the aerial means will attempt, it will be reduced even more and will be brought under control.

For this reason, the staff of all the Fire Services of Central Greece has been put on general alert. At the scene of the fire, 149 firefighters are operating with 5 groups of pedestrians (of which 3 are E.MO.DE.) and 31 vehicles. Assistance is also provided by volunteer firefighters, water tankers and construction machinery, who are trying to create fire zones at critical points and open passages to bring fire trucks closer to the fires.

A unit of the IAEA, by order of the head of the PS, Alexios Rapanos, has already gone to the area to investigate the causes of the fire.

The fire broke out at around 14.00 in the afternoon, yesterday Saturday, in a grassy area between the area of Gaia and Kremasto, Evia. Shortly before 19.00 in the afternoon, a message was sent, via 112, to the residents to evacuate the village of Kremastos as a precaution and to head to Trachili.

“A battle was fought so that we could control the fronts and be able to bring the fire brigade close to the front of the fire. “It seems that we have won this battle for the time being and it makes us optimistic,” the mayor of Kymi-Aliveri Thanasis Bourandas told APE-MPE. Exactly the same assessment was made by the Deputy Regional Governor of Evia, George Kelaiditis, who underlined that “we were able to keep the fire front away from the settlement and thus remove the threat.”

According to the deputy governor, “based on the existing conditions, we hope that we will be able to keep the flames where we have now trapped them until the morning.”

As the governor Fanis Spanos told APE-MPE, who coordinated the next moves in the Coordination body that met in the village of Kremastos, “shortly after 20.00 the situation was frightening as we had no way to approach the multiple fronts of the fire. but we were able to keep the flames away from the village about 700 meters from the first houses. At the same time we reduced the fronts and with the ground forces, the machines and the volunteers we were able to reduce the fire, so we are optimistic that if something unexpected does not happen during the night we will be able with the first light of day using the air means to let’s control it “.
