Erdogan-Guterres communication on grain exports from Ukraine

by

Turkey, acting as a mediator between Kiev and Moscow, is seeking an agreement on the safe transit of Ukrainian grain across the Black Sea, as part of a UN plan to prevent a food crisis.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres had a telephone conversation today discussing the issue of grain exports from Ukrainian ports.

Erdogan told the UN secretary-general that Turkey was continuing its efforts to “export Ukrainian grain through the Black Sea, which would help prevent a food crisis,” according to a statement from the Turkish presidency.

Ukraine is a major supplier of cereals to countries in Africa and the Middle East. As the Russian invasion of Ukraine continues, the embargo on exports is pushing up prices and causing global food shortages.
