The 92-year-old has become the oldest person to take the GCSE in the UK.

Derek Skipper of Orwell to Cambridge said it doesn’t matter if his result is “two parts”, but when the test was announced in August he was at level 4 or 5. I want.

A former RAF radar engineer decided to sit at GCSE, challenge himself with the latest test strips and beat family friends who were trying to pass the exam.

In the process, Derek not only learned new math skills, but also YouTube, which he used to complete courses offered by the Cam Academy Trust.

Derek took the test at Comberton Village College with 16-year-old Jim near Cambridge.

The married father of two said: I bowed my head and continued with the case.

I’m obviously a bit slow, and I’ve noticed that I sometimes turn it off. My brain stopped working for a minute or two.

I’m out of time, but I’ve answered most of the questions except the ones that were hard for me. I should go back if I have time.

“The test was excluded.

“As a result, 2 games are not relevant, but I would like to win 4 or 5 games.

“Now we have a 19-year-old friend, but she couldn’t do maths and she failed the GCSE three times. I couldn’t help her so I beat her. I made up my mind.

I thought it wasn’t that hard, so I continued.

As a teenager, Derek cycled three miles a day from East London to school.

He only missed one day of school during World War II, when a bomb exploded on the front door of his bike, leaving tires behind.

Derek graduated from school with five school credentials (GCSE equivalent to O-level predecessor), including mathematics obtained with the help of slide rule and spreadsheet books.

At the age of 18, he joined the Royal Air Force to study commerce, became a radar fitter, and later served in the Korean War.

His 21st century study included up to five hours of research per week and provided twice-weekly testing sessions, zooming, and the ability to use a calculator. This is what he liked very much.

“I like it so much that I learned a lot about how to use the calculator,” he said.

“I think the course was easier than many others.

“But I completely forgot or didn’t learn about Vienna charts, data collection, frequency tables and averages, modes and ranges (I only did averages that I understand), leaves and stems, etc. There were still a lot of things left.

Derek, who gave up driving due to vision problems and took a maths dissertation with the help of an NHS-provided magnifying glass, said the ability to learn remotely was important.

“I was introduced to YouTube. You just want to know something, YouTube is your boy. I saw a lot of lessons,” he said.

If it hadn’t been for the zoom, I wouldn’t have done it. I never go into a dark night.

Course instructor Shane Day said: He was the first 92 year old I ever taught and the oldest before that was 74 years old.
