A Russian colonel responsible for carrying Vladimir Putin’s nuclear code wallet has been found in his home near Moscow.
Vadim Zimin, 53, is reportedly seriously ill in the intensive care unit.
The nuclear control bag is always attached to the president of Russia.
Colonel Jimin, retired from the Federal Security Service (FSB), has been taking care of him since he was an aide to former White House chief of staff Boris Yeltsin.
He continued his role as a security forces colonel under his successor, Vladimir Putin, but his exact role against the former KGB spy is unknown.
Jimin was found with a gunshot wound in the kitchen of his apartment in the Krasnogorsk district of Moscow.
At the time, his medical partner Putin was treating those injured during Putin’s war in Ukraine.
According to Moskovsky Komsomolets, the shooting occurred after Zimin was threatened with criminal charges for receiving a bribe after joining customs as a senior official.
In a criminal case, he was under house arrest and denied cheating.
Russian media reported that the official had a “suicide attempt” after drinking with his brother.
Jimin was found by his brother in the bathroom during the Monday shooting.
He lay with a head wound in a pool of blood and had a 79-9TM pneumatic pistol.
Putin previously posed a symbolic threat to the West when Jimin painted the nuclear code side by side.
He did so while attending ultra-nationalist politician Vladimir Zhirinovsky’s funeral in Moscow in April.
The portfolio includes the Kremlin’s strategic missile launchers.
