Boris Johnson said voters are having a “tough time” after the Conservatives lost twice in by-elections.

The prime minister’s comments came after Oliver Doden resigned as co-chairman of the Tories following the announcement.

Johnson told reporters he promised to “listen” to voters facing issues like the cost-of-living crisis.

“There is no doubt that the results of the by-elections were difficult. I think they reflect a lot, but I have to admit that voters are having a hard time.

“As a government, I think we need to listen to what people are saying, especially the difficulties that people are facing in terms of living expenses, which I think is the number one problem for most people…

“Now we are facing pressure on the costs of living. We see sharp increases in the costs of fuel, energy and food. It hurt people.”
