Six police officers were killed in an exchange of fire in the Mexican state of Nuevo Leon (north) as they were confronted with a large number of criminals who also had the advantage in terms of firepower, officials said.

The bomber struck shortly after noon in front of a Mexican-US police station near the Mexican-US border, according to the State Department of Homeland Security.

“Unfortunately, six members of our unit lost their lives on duty,” the ministry said in a press release, dismissing the “heroism” of the dead.

Four other police officers were injured and are being treated in hospital, according to the same source.

Center-left President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who inherited a country torn by a wave of violence attributed to organized crime, is finding it difficult to cope with the security crisis. The annual number of homicides is going to break a record this year.

The recent killing of two Jesuit priests and a tourist guide in the northern state of Coahuila has provoked a backlash from Pope Francis. “So many murders in Mexico,” said the head of the Roman Catholic Church.

Mexico has recorded – according to official data – more than 340,000 murders and tens of thousands of disappearances since the so-called “war on drugs” was launched in December 2006, with the deployment of the armed forces inside the country.
