The US Supreme Court ruled on Friday that abortion is no longer a constitutional right in the country. The ruling reverses a precedent set 49 years ago when the court ruled Roe v. Wade and ruled that governments could not infringe on women’s right to privacy by prohibiting termination of pregnancy.
Now, the court, formed by a conservative majority, has changed its understanding. As a result, states controlled by the Republican party must ban or limit the procedure — some of them have already passed laws to that effect, restricting abortion even in cases of rape, for example.
In this Monday’s episode (27), Café da Manhã talks to Gabriela Rondon, a researcher and lawyer at the Anis Institute of Bioethics, about the influence of Roe vs. Wade in the USA and in the world, which path the country took until the historic decision was overturned and the impacts of this for Americans.
