According to reports in the French press, for several weeks now, jellyfish have been multiplying in the Cκτήte d’Azur due to the winds, but also because the turtles and dolphins that eat them are becoming endangered species.
More than 80 swimmers in Marseille were attacked by jellyfish during the Monte Cristo Challenge.
According to French media, at 8:30 on Sunday morning, amateur and professional swimmers entered the water to cross a 5 km route. “As soon as it started, after 5 minutes, we heard screams signaling the presence of many jellyfish”explains François Jacqueline of SNSM at BFM Marseille Provence.

Rescuers then intervened to transport 46 people back to Prado beach. Despite the presence of a herd of jellyfish, some swimmers continued the race.
But while rescuers had completed the evacuation of the swimmers from the first race, they had to rescue about 40 more swimmers from the second race, also bitten by jellyfish. In fact, to soothe the pain they put foam … shaving.

According to reports, for several weeks now, jellyfish have been multiplying in the Cκτήte d’Azur. Especially because of the winds, but also because of their “predators”: turtles and dolphins are becoming more and more rare.
Still, it has not been clarified so far whether these are purple jellyfish.
