San Antonio today was 102 degrees. Imagine being dumped in an 18-wheeler and left for dead: 42 people were killed today. Is @AliMayorkas mentioning his name? He wrote with reference to the Secretary of National Security, Alejandro Mallorca.

Mallorca also responded to the case online, adding that ICE is under investigation. He called human traffickers “honest individuals who pay no attention to vulnerable people who threaten to exploit for profit.”

In San Antonio, the main city in South Texas, the highest temperature reached 103 °F (39.4 °C) on Monday.

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said Tuesday morning that the death toll had risen from 46 to 50. Of those killed, 22 were Mexicans, seven Guatemalans and two Hondurans. The whereabouts of the remaining 19 people have not yet been confirmed.

The San Antonio police chief said all three had been arrested. Their identities are unknown and their involvement in the case is unknown.

The survivors found in the abandoned truck lacked water and air conditioning, even though the truck was a refrigerator and its air conditioning was not working.

The tragedy comes after the number of immigrants detained at the southern border of the United States reached record highs in recent months.

Authorities have encountered more than a million immigrants at the southern border since January, according to data from US Customs and Border Protection. This is six times more than in 2020 and twice as much as in 2019.
