by

The bad weather that took place last night in Austria, in addition to one dead and one missing, caused great damage in the mountainous area of Villach in the state of Carinthia on the border with Italy and Slovenia.

One person was killed and another was reported missing after landslides caused by heavy rains that cut off roads and isolated villages, Austrian authorities announced today.

The bad weather last night, Tuesday to Wednesday, which also caused rivers to overflow, caused severe damage in the mountainous region of Villach in the state of Carinthia, in the south of the country, on the border with Italy and Slovenia.

“A resident was unfortunately found dead outside his home,” a local police spokesman told AFP, without elaborating. According to the Austrian news agency APA, this is an 82-year-old man who was swept away by a wave of mud.

Rescuers and soldiers called for reinforcements are trying to locate another man in his car, said local spokesman Byrd Ripan.

“We are fighting on different fronts,” he continued. “We have sent helicopters (…) but some farms are very far away. As he said, ‘many’ houses have been partially buried but their exact number remains unknown.

Austria is facing a heat wave this week accompanied by thunderstorms. The proliferation of extreme weather events in Europe is, according to scientists, a direct consequence of rising global temperatures.
