Taiwanese Shun-Wei Chang, 34, was betrayed. As part of his revenge, he posted hundreds of videos on the pornography site Pornhub. Chang, however, does not appear naked. Much less having sex with someone. Wearing a gray sweatshirt, he scribbles equations on the blackboard and teaches calculus to high school students.
There is nothing erotic about Chang’s content. Precisely because it is so out of character with the onanist environment, its story has circulated in Taiwan as a case of unusual entrepreneurship and perseverance. On a site dedicated to explicit sex videos, the instructor has already reached nearly 2 million views talking about math.
“I wanted to differentiate myself from other teachers and show the world how beautiful math is,” Chang tells sheet. “The general public leaves positive comments — although a minority hate my videos because I interrupt the desire of anyone who wants to see pornography.”
The Taiwanese had been working for some time in the market for courses, a millionaire branch in a region marked by competitiveness in the educational environment. It had its own school. In 2020, however, its employees left and opened a business upstairs, robbing customers. Chang was left alone, accompanied by a debt of R$200,000 — in part due to a loan taken out to finance the business, now in the process of failing.
So, he had the idea to start producing content for Pornhub. The site, after all, receives around 120 million visits a day. Chang thought that if he could get the attention of part of that audience, he would be able to increase his clientele. To stand out in a naked world, he got dressed. “The covered body creates a huge contrast to the others on the site.”
Chang wears the very same gray sweatshirt in every video. It is intentional, it claims, to create a memorable identity. He says that one day he will auction the gift — which he apparently never laundered — and donate “most” of the money to help students from peripheral regions to study.
The teacher worked hard to create and maintain his profile on Pornhub. He even recorded 30 to 40 videos in a single day. I slept in the prep course so as not to waste time. “The channel had just started and we needed to create our brand quickly,” he explains. “That’s why we publish so many videos in such a short time.”
He also created a series of special content to solidify the channel. For example, he spent ten hours live solving a hundred calculus exercises. He also visited universities across the country to help students prepare for exams.
The Taiwanese teacher was not limited to Pornhub. He also created a profile on OnlyFans, a site used to sell content — usually erotic. Subscription to the teacher’s account costs almost R$30 per month. The man in the gray sweatshirt is also on Instagram, YouTube and Twitter, Chinese video-sharing site Bilibili and Taiwanese blogging network Plurk, among other platforms.
By mixing commitment with creative solutions, Chang saved the business. It does not say how many students there are in the course or how much it earns, but it seems that it has managed to pay off its debts. One of the few pieces of information he gives about the company is that most of the clientele are Chinese living in the US.
The Pornhub team became aware of the success and contacted the teacher to send some gifts. Chang appeared on the company’s Instagram live. “I also sent them some collaboration ideas, but I’m waiting for an answer,” he says. “They must be very happy.”
One of the secrets of Chang’s profile is to incorporate some of the vocabulary and aesthetics of porn in a non-erotic content. The photo at the top of his channel page shows him shouting “play hard study hard” (have a lot of fun, but study hard, in a free translation), with the words engulfed in flames. In the account details, as the professionals in the porn industry do, the professor put information about the size of his penis and whether or not he is circumcised, as well as his sexual orientation. He also used keywords like “giant breasts” and “mouth sex” to hook Internet users.
The comments box gives a sample of the varied reactions to the content. One person said some time ago that, even without understanding Mandarin, he could keep up with the class; another celebrated the example of a teacher who goes to great lengths to explain the subject. There are also a number of erotic puns comparing sex with solving equations. And there are irate users who blurt out, “I came here to forget about math, not to be reminded of it.”
Chang insists that the numbers are beautiful but not sexy, despite being on that porn site. “Someone might get physically excited with them, but I don’t think that’s the case for me.”
