This Thursday (30) the summit of NATO, the western military alliance, held in Madrid, Spain, ended. At the end of the meeting, the organization officially invited two new members to join, Finland and Sweden – two countries with a history of neutrality.
With the invasion of Ukraine in February, Finns and Swedes began to see with concern the proximity to the Russians and sought the protection of the Western organization. Until now, Turkey, which is part of NATO, has been stalling the negotiations, but the country changed its position this week.
The arrival of the two countries brings the military alliance to an unprecedented territorial proximity with Russia – exactly what President Vladimir Putin said he wanted to avoid with the invasion of Ukraine.
At this Friday’s Breakfast (1st), the columnist of Sheet and researcher at Cebrap (Brazilian Center for Analysis and Planning) Mathias Alencastro analyzes NATO’s new military strategy and discusses whether the movement brings the world closer to a major war.
