A cross-party group of MPs suggests that the “global covid attachment” that kept children from getting vaccinated was due to the recurrence of polio in the UK.
Lockdown restrictions and “narrow focus” on Covid injections mean other regular vaccines are prioritized, the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Pandemic Response has reported.
Last month, the British Health and Safety Agency declared a national emergency after uncovering evidence that polio was spreading into sewers for the first time in nearly 40 years.
No cases have yet been confirmed, but the virus was detected in a sample taken in East London between February and May.
Individual detection of the virus is relatively common and should not be a concern, but samples taken later in the year contained a mutant version of the same strain.
This suggests that the virus has evolved over several months, which probably means that the virus has spread between individuals.
Health officials said it could spread to a small number of people, perhaps extended families living in cities.
APPG co-chair Esther McVey told The Telegraph on Monday that the pandemic saw “one of the highest priority conditions, including life-saving vaccination against childhood diseases”.
Polio’s resurrection may be “the latest example of how this approach created completely avoidable collateral damage,” he added.
It has been almost a year since government advisers warned of a sharp decline in regular childhood vaccinations due to “vaccination fatigue”.
Poliomyelitis is usually spread through food and water that comes into contact with the feces of infected people, and sometimes through coughing and sneezing.
It mainly affects children under 5 years of age, usually causes no symptoms, sometimes causes flu-like symptoms, and rarely causes paralysis.
Children are regularly vaccinated against polio, but in recent years thousands have missed their appointments.
Almost 15% of British children did not receive polio boosters in 2021. That is, they were not fully protected in 2021. Around a third of them live in London.
Tatton MP goes on to say:
“Last summer we were particularly warned that our children had not received significant vaccinations for other catastrophic conditions such as cancer, meningitis and polio. Now we are. Are they paying for the global Covid obsession?
Look for a Covid study to investigate the long-term effects of pandemics on regular childhood vaccines.
APPG Labor MP Graham Stringer said reliance on vaccines was “used as a dedicated approach to energy and resources by the NHS and government to promote healthy children in Covid-19 in the absence of clear benefits. Made”.
The last case of wild-type polio was reported in 1984, and the virus was completely eradicated in 2003.
