The resurgence of the pandemic in the middle of the tourist season is cause for concern.

In Italy cases of coronavirus increased in the last week (from June 29 to July 5) by 55%, according to data from the Gimbe Scientific Foundation. At the same time, the patient admissions in hospitals there was an increase of 32.6%, in ICUs of the country by 36.3%, while deaths increased by 18.4%.

The Gimbe Foundation adds that the increase is continuous and that there is a large percentage of cases, which are not recorded. “The high percentage of the population that is positive for the virus risks causing a ‘new de facto lockdown’, including in the tourism sector”reports the scientific report.

“At this stage, the administration of the fourth dose of the vaccine to the elderly and vulnerable groups must be accelerated, but also the use of the mask must be significantly increased,” underlined the president of Gimbe Nino Kartabellota.

The region in Italy that has seen the largest increase in coronavirus cases in the last week is Lombardywith a rate of 95.9%, while the most limited spread of the virus was found in Sardiniawith a 24.7% increase in incidents. “There is substantial cause for concern as hospital admissions in the coming weeks are expected to continue to rise” emphasized, finally, the president of the Gimbe Foundation.
