Johnson’s speech live

by

Johnson will remain as prime minister until a successor is named – “I want you to know how sad I am to be leaving the best job in the world,” he said.

We have agreed that a new Conservative leader and a new prime minister are needed and that process starts now, Boris Johnson announced outside Downing Street.

He began his speech by saying that it is clear the will of the parliamentary Conservative party to have a new leader and a new prime minister.

The schedule of the process will be announced next week.

He will remain in the position of prime minister until his successor is appointed, while in the past hours he appointed a new interim cabinet which will serve, like him, until the election of a new prime minister.

No one is irreplaceable, Johnson said and expressed pride in the privilege of being prime minister.

“I want you to know how sad I am to leave the best job in the world,” he said.

The unbearable pressure exerted by the resignations of more than 50 executives led to rapid developments in the political scene of Britain.

“A not entirely magnanimous exit” comments the BBC, which notes Boris Johnson’s statement that it was “outrageous” for his colleagues to abandon him when he was only a few points behind in the polls.

His decision to remain prime minister until there is a new party leader “is unpopular with some Conservative colleagues,” comments the British network.
