President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) regretted, this Friday morning (8), the assassination of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. The former prime minister was killed during an election campaign in the city of Nara.
The Brazilian Chief Executive expressed regret at the death of the former prime minister during an agenda in the interior of São Paulo. “It brings to mind the moments I had with him in Brazil and Japan and the affection we have with the Japanese community that lives in our country,” Bolsonaro said during a speech in Pirassununga.
“An affable, intelligent, patriotic man, who in all the times we were together, sought the well-being of his population, as well as listening to what they could collaborate with our Brazilian people”, he added.
The president also said that he had declared three days of official mourning in Brazil over Abe’s death. The determination was published in an extra edition of the Federal Official Gazette.
“It’s the price for fighting for your country. Often, or most of the time, the enemy is not outside, it’s inside our homeland,” added the president.
Earlier, Bolsonaro described the murder, in a Twitter post, as “unjustifiable cruelty”. He also thanked Abe for his friendship with Brazil and called for the crime to be punished strictly. “We are with Japan.” Other heads of state also mourned Abe’s death.
Bolsonaro participated in a marlin delivery ceremony in Pirassununga. After the speeches about Abe, there was a moment of silence among those present in memory of the former premier.
One of the bullets that hit the politician would have penetrated the heart. Abe was rescued and taken to hospital in cardiac arrest. He received blood transfusions, but the bleeding could not be stopped.
