A family of 21 teenagers who died as a result of a nightclub tragedy was reunited two weeks ago.
The young people visited the Enyobeni tavern in the East London area of South Africa to celebrate the end of the school year.
They met just days after the country lifted the mask mission.
However, 21 teenagers were found dead in a tavern and mystery still surrounds the cause.
“It smelled like gas,” said the survivor of the case.
Currently, more than 1,000 friends, family, and community members are gathering for a grand funeral.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa attended and paid tribute to the dead.
The coffin was moved to a large tent where the funeral was held.
However, the two families opted for a private burial and organizers said the exposed coffin was empty.
A large choir sang an emotional hymn in memory of a teenager as a distraught family looked on.
The funeral organizer told local journalists that the children would be buried in another cemetery on Wednesday and in a few days.
When the tent was full, more mourners sat outside.
The cause of death of a young man between 13 and 17 years old is still unknown.
Police earlier said the stampede was excluded because the dead had not been injured in line with such an incident.
Pathologists study the cause of death from blood samples.
All were under 18, the legal drinking age in South Africa.
Authorities closed the bar when asked how many underage teenagers had gathered at an establishment selling alcohol after midnight on June 26.
Earlier this week, Police Minister Bheki Chele wept while addressing the press on Sunday morning.
“I heard they were young, but when I saw them I realized it was a mess,” he told reporters.
“Looking at their faces, we can see that we are dealing with children.”
Sele told reporters: “At first I was told it was a stampede, but apparently there was no stampede.
“I don’t want to guess the cause of death. That’s why I brought the best team of experts to let me know if the cause of death was poison.”
Community members in East London say underage drinking is a notorious problem.
The legal drinking age is 18, but it is not enforced on a regular basis.
The Daily Dispatch reported that “the body lay strangely, as if it had suddenly fallen to the ground while dancing and talking.”
The newspaper added that the body “showed no obvious signs of injury”.
