Bolsonaro called Abe “a brilliant leader and a great friend of Brazil”
Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro expresses “anger and sadness” at the killing of Japan’s former prime minister Shinzo Abe and announced that he had declared three days of national mourning in Brazil.
Bolsonaro called him Abe “a brilliant leader and great friend of Brazil,” posting a photo of himself with Abe on Twitter and calling for “such unwarranted brutality” to be severely punished.
– As a signal of our respect to the Japanese people, of recognition of Shinzo Abe’s friendship with Brazil and of solidarity in the face of unjustifiable cruelty, I decreed official mourning in all countries for 3 days. The Brazilian president met with Abe several times at the G20 summit in Osaka months after taking office in 2019 and traveled to Japan for an official visit later that year.
“We stand by Japan,” Bolsonaro said.
