Russian energy giant Gazprom reduced the capacity to transport natural gas from the Nord Stream 1 pipeline to just 40% of capacity last month, citing a delay in returning equipment undergoing maintenance from Germany’s Siemens Energy to Canada.
Canada will return repaired Russian turbines to Germany, which are needed to maintain the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline — exempt from sanctions imposed on Moscow — the country’s natural resources ministry announced Sunday.
At the same time, the Canadian government announced that it would expand sanctions against Russia’s energy sector to include the manufacturing industry.

Ukraine on Thursday expressed its opposition to the delivery of a turbine from Canada to Russia’s Gazprom to restore gas supplies to Germany, stressing that such a development would conflict with the imposition of sanctions on Russia.
Both Canada and Germany, however, do not seem to want the turbine to be an excuse for Russia to reduce the flow of natural gas through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline.
Kyiv has accused Moscow of using the gas supply as a weapon to pressure its European allies to withdraw support for Ukraine as it resists the Russian invasion that began on February 24.
