The Liberal Democratic Party and the Komeito party are expected to win between 69 and 83 of the 125 seats to be renewed
The Japanese Prime Minister’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party Fumio Kishida it is expected that he will maintain the majority in the upper house with his junior partner in government coalitionfollowing today’s election, as reported by the state-run NHK network.
The long-awaited result comes two days after prominent party member and political figurehead former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was assassinated.
The Liberal Democratic Party and the party Komeito they are expected to win between 69 and 83 seats out of the 125 to be renewed, according to NHK exit polls. The Senate has a total of 248 seats, half of which are renewed every three years.
As the centre-left has not presented an attractive alternative Constitutional Democratic Party it risks losing some of the 45 seats it holds as well as its position as the official opposition party.
In a country often criticized for the lack of women in politics, institutions and business, a record 33% of the 545 candidates are women.
