Nelson de Sá: Unable to make Russia ‘pariah’, Biden visits ‘pariah’ Saudi Arabia

by

The Washington Post opened its Sunday pages (in print, below) for Joe Biden to publish the article “Why I’m Going to Saudi Arabia”—after he promised to make the Saudi government a “pariah” for dismembering a Washington Post columnist, Jamal Khashoggi, who wrote in the same space.

The Democratic president’s justification is that the visit “will advance important American interests”, for example, “its energy resources are vital to mitigating the impact on supply” after the sanctions on Russian oil.

Bloomberg, by contrast, produced the report “Biden’s Mission for Saudi Oil Faces Reduced Capacity Reality.”

In short, “the visit to a country he has promised to isolate represents a significant thawing in relations, but the Saudis and their partners have limited production capacity to offer in exchange for this political concession.”

PARIA FOR FEW

The New York Times, already in the statement of its coverage of the meeting of chancellors of the G20, acknowledged that “Russia’s Sergei Lavrov is a pariah only for a few”, the USA above all.

He “met with several ministers from, among others, China, India, Brazil, Turkey, Argentina and Indonesia.” The Indian chancellor, for example, “was seen walking with Lavrov.”
