Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov, in an interview published today, is unreservedly in favor of Gazprom’s proposal to extend the practice of selling liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the national currency, the ruble, in addition to natural gas transported through pipelines .
Asked about Gazprom’s proposal, Mr Siluanov told the Ventomasti newspaper that “we support it in every way”.
Russian news agency Interfax, citing a senior company official, reported a week ago that Gazprom’s management is proposing to extend this sales method to LNG as well. A day later, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that no final decision had been made, nor had decrees been prepared for such a thing at the moment.
In March, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that “unfriendly countries” would henceforth be required to pay for natural gas they buy from his country in rubles. Some of Gazprom’s biggest customers in Europe saw their supply cut when they refused to comply with Moscow’s terms.
