The incident occurred in the afternoon hours of Thursday, July 7, with the meteor spotted in the sky over the Cook Strait, which separates the North and South islands of New Zealand.

The video of the falling meteorite was recorded by camera that a local plumber had on the dashboard of his car. THE flaming ball seen in the footage is believed to be a fragment of a small meteorite, up to a few meters wide, which broke into smaller pieces as it entered the atmosphere, causing a sonic boom as it exploded with a force roughly equivalent to 1,800 tons of TNT.

In fact, the shock wave created by the meteorite was detected by the GeoNet, a network of seismometers used to detect earthquakes. At the same time, the intense flash of light produced by the event was recorded especially by satellites used to detect lightning worldwide.

The meteor probably broke into pieces over the ocean, so its fragments are almost impossible to recover.
