Six are the candidates to succeed Boris Johnson who advanced to tomorrow’s second vote among the Conservative Party caucus.
Two were excluded from today’s first vote, as they did not collect the required number of 30 votes.
The former finance minister received the most votes Rishi Sunakwith 88. The former Minister of Defense followed Penny Mordant with 67 and then the current Minister of Foreign Affairs Liz Truss with 50.
The Deputy Minister of Local Government also managed to enter the top six Kemi Bedenock with 40 votes and the head of the foreign affairs committee of the Parliament Tom Tugenhut with 37. With the 32 votes she won today, the Attorney General will participate in tomorrow’s vote Suella Braverman.
Apart from continuity of the succession process Mr. Sunak’s replacement at the Ministry of Finance remained Nadeem Zahawi with 25 votes and the former Minister of Health and Minister of Foreign Affairs Jeremy Hunt with 18.
One candidate will be excluded from Thursday’s vote and three more votes will be scheduled for early next week to leave the final pair of candidates to be judged and voted on by Conservative Party members.
The new Conservative leader and the country’s new Prime Minister will be announced on September 5.
Despite Mr Sunak’s lead in caucus preferences, the 42-year-old politician is trailing Ms Mordot significantly in a more recent poll of party members.
