Walker’s death comes on the heels of a string of recent, “unjustified” police killings of unarmed African-Americans by their critics.
Walker’s death has been followed by protests in Akron demanding police accountability and justice for the young man, who was laid to rest Thursday.
Kohler said Walker suffered gunshot wounds to the torso, pelvis, legs and face. Officers opened fire on him when he tried to flee after being stopped for a minor traffic violation.
After a chase of several minutes, Walker jumped out of his car and started running, according to video footage released by police. At one point he appears to turn towards the officers, who believed he was armed. A gun was later found inside his abandoned car.
Kohler said her lab did not test for traces of gunpowder on Walker’s hands, explaining that the test is not always reliable.
The eight officers involved in the incident have been placed on furlough, Akron Police Chief Steve Mylett said.
