In the UK, ministers plan to hold an emergency Cobra meeting today due to potentially life-threatening record high temperatures.
Minister Keith Malthaus of the Cabinet Office will chair a meeting of the Government’s Private Cobra Emergency Committee to discuss how to respond.
This will be the second Cobra meeting chaired by Mr. Malthaus on this topic.
The Met Office has issued the first ever red alert against extreme heat, with a 50% chance temperatures will reach 40C next week.
Forecasters give an 80% chance that the mercury will exceed the current UK record temperature of 38.7°C set in Cambridge in 2019.
Temperatures rise over the weekend before peaking on Tuesday.
The amber heat warning covers most of England and Wales from Sunday to Tuesday.
Meanwhile, red warnings on Monday and Tuesday cover the region from London to Manchester and York Valley.
High temperatures are especially dangerous for vulnerable people such as pregnant women, the elderly and the very young, but everyone is warned to pay special attention.

Temperatures can reach 30°C in the capital, 27°C in Cardiff, 24°C in Belfast and 23°C in Edinburgh on Sundays.
Temperatures on Tuesday will rise a few more degrees, reaching 30 degrees in most of England and Wales.
There is a 50% chance that temperatures will reach 40 degrees Celsius somewhere in the UK. Probably along the A1 corridor from London to Scotland, including Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Yorkshire and the North East.
The UK Department of Health and Safety has raised the health warning for heat from level 3 to level 4 to make it a “national emergency”.
