Dr. Anthony Fauci, America’s top infectious disease expert, has announced that he will resign before the end of President Joe Biden’s first term.
“I’ve always said that I will retire at some point in the reasonable future,” Forchu told NBC News on Monday.
“So over time I’ll probably quit and whatever it is, I’ll move on to the next stage of my professional career.”
Fauci added that “no decision has been made” on when to retire, but that the end of Biden’s term is a sign of his retirement plan.
Biden’s current term expires in January 2025.
Biden’s top adviser on the coronavirus, Forch, said in a Politico article published Monday that he would play his role until the virus was eliminated because “I think we’re going to live with it.”
The 81-year-old was director of the National Institute of Infectious Diseases for decades.
Fauci rose to prominence during the Trump administration when he frequently provided updates on the federal government’s fight against the coronavirus.
But when asked what his legacy should be, Fauci didn’t give the Covid-19 answer. Instead, he highlighted his research on HIV and AIDS and became director of NIAID in 1984, working in the field of infectious diseases.
Establishing a presidential emergency plan for AIDS relief under George W. Bush “may be the most influential thing I’ve done in my career,” Politico said. According to the State Department, the program has saved an estimated 21 million lives worldwide.
